Two American sailors have died in Bahrain after being shot at their barracks, the United States navy has said.
Although the navy has not confirmed the circumstances of the shooting, it is understood that no non-US citizens were involved and the barracks in question is not thought to have been breached.
A third sailor has been left in a critical condition after the incident, which took place at 05:00 local time (03:00 BST).
"The incident is currently under investigation," a US navy spokesperson said. "Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it shortly after 06:00 (04:00 BST).
"The names of the sailors are being withheld pending notification of next of kin."
More than 3,000 US military personnel are based in the Gulf island nation; accompanying the country's fifth fleet.
