Two British soldiers were killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan on Saturday.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the two servicemen were caught up in a blast on Saturday in the town of Musa Qaleh, Helmand province.

One of the as yet unidentified soldiers belonged to the Light Dragoons regiment while the other served in the Parachute regiment. Families of the two dead soldiers have been informed and their names will be released by the MoD soon.

Speaking about the deaths, Task Force Helmand spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson said: "We grieve as the family, loved ones and colleagues grieve. They will always be in our thoughts and prayers and we offer our heartfelt condolences at this very sad time."

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesman Captain Mark Durkin paid tribute to the soldiers and extended his condolences to the family.

He said: "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of these courageous service members. ISAF is mourning the loss of two respected colleagues.

"We pay tribute to the sacrifice of these brave warriors, who have given all while helping to provide a brighter future for the Afghan people."

The deaths bring the total number of casualties since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001 to 165.
