Pakistan has responded quickly to US calls for action after last month's Mumbai attacks, arresting three people from the organisation believed to be responsible for them.
The Pakistani terrorist group Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) is widely blamed for the 172 deaths caused by the violence seen in Mumbai. Officials from a charity linked to it, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, were detained today.
According to reports the arrests occurred at an LeT camp outside Muzaffarabad, the Pakistani capital of the disputed Kashmir province.
Brief exchanges of gunfire occurred before troops seized control of the LeT camp. A helicopter was seen hovering overhead before gunfire and several loud explosions were heard by eyewitnesses.
Today's arrests are the first outward signs from Pakistan it is taking steps to locate the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks. Tensions on the sub-continent have been simmering since New Delhi suggested Pakistani elements were responsible.
It follows US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice's pressure on Pakistan that it has a "responsibility to act" yesterday.
