The Taliban claim to be in the possession of the bodies of two American soldiers after Nato admitted two of its troops were missing.
The soldiers, which Nato refused to either give the nationalities or names of, were reported missing on Wednesday during a resupply mission in western Afghanistan.
Defence sources told inthenews.co.uk the missing soldiers were not thought to be British.
Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said an "extensive search" was underway for the missing soldiers, whose families have been informed and being kept updated on developments.
"We continue exhaustive search and rescue operations to locate our missing service members. We are doing everything we can to find them," said Isaf spokesperson Captain Jane Campbell.
"The families of these service members have been notified about their loved ones' status, and we will continue to keep them informed as information becomes available."
Meanwhile, the Taliban said they held the bodies of two foreign soldiers who drowned in the western Badghis province.
A spokesperson contacted the Reuters news agency to say the soldiers, thought to be American, had drowned in a river after arriving in the area during a gun battle.
