A staff sergeant who trained Princes William and Harry at Sandhurst was charged last night over the manslaughter of a policeman.
Steven Graham, 40, will appear in court accused of the manslaughter of Joe Carroll, who was taking a suspected drunk to prison when his car crashed.
Graham, who has served 22 years in the services, is also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on inspector Brian English, who was present in the car when it overturned on the A69 near Corbridge, Northumberland on Thursday.
He was originally arrested for breach of the peace after a domestic incident at a house in the Hexham area at 01:30 BST on Thursday, two hours before the crash.
PC Carroll, 46, suffered fatal injuries while his two passengers suffered only minor wounds.
Graham will appear before magistrates sitting in Bedlington, Northumberland.
Carroll's chief constable, Mike Craik, described the deceased as "a real old-fashioned copper".
"He was the sort of local bobby you would all want as your local cop."
