US senator Edward Kennedy is to undergo surgery for a brain tumour, an official statement has confirmed.

The senior Democrat, 76, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour last month after he suffered a seizure.

The surgery is due to take place at a North Carolina hospital on Monday and Mr Kennedy will begin chemotherapy next week.

The senator is the youngest brother of assassinated president John F Kennedy and senator Robert F Kennedy.

In 1980 he ran an unsuccessful campaign against the incumbent president Jimmy Carter for the Democratic candidacy.

Since then he has become an influential member of the party and in 2006 was named by Time magazine as one of America's ten best senators.
