The United States can rely on France for support in its war on terror, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said today.
Speaking before Congress, Mr Sarkozy sought to strengthen ties with the US which were weakened by his predecessor Jacques Chirac's stance against the war in Iraq.
"America can count on France in its battle on terror," he said. "Terrorism will not prevail for democracies are not entitled to be weak."
He added: "It is together that we must fight to defend and promote the values and ideals of freedom and democracy."
Mr Sarkozy said that the prospect of Iran with nuclear weapons is "unacceptable" to France, drawing applause from his audience.
As part of his visit to the US the French president attended a black tie dinner last night with the country's president George Bush in which he said the reason for his visit was to "reconquer the heart of America in a lasting fashion".
"I've come to say one simple thing," he added. "France and the United States are allies, have been allies, and will continue to be allies, and have been so forever."
