A criminal network centred around former Kenyan president Daniel Arap Moi stole over $1 billion (£0.5 billion) from his country, a report alleges.

The Guardian newspaper quotes a report obtained by anti-corruption website Wikileaks by international risk consultancy Kroll International which makes the claims against Mr Moi and members of his family.

Among the report's allegations are the printing of counterfeit money, the siphoning of funds to locations in 28 countries and internal threats of violence between the president's family and his political aides, the newspaper claims.

A flat in Knightsbridge in London, as well as a home in Surrey, were purchased with the money while other properties were reportedly held in South Africa and New York.

Mr Moi ruled Kenya from 1978 until 2002, when he was constitutionally prevented from a third term in office. His preferred successor was defeated by Mwai Kibaki, who instigated an investigation on corruption by the former regime.

The 110-page Kroll report is believed to be the result of that investigation, but the Guardian suggests the Kibaki administration's own Anglo Leasing scandal resulted in a premature end to Nairobi actively pursuing the case.
