A tearful Paris Hilton has been sent back to jail.
The millionaire heiress was released from prison three days into her 45-day custodial sentence for violating her probation on a drink-driving ban yesterday.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles county sheriff's department said she had been released on medical grounds and had been given an electronic tag while staying under house arrest.
Now Judge Michael Sauer has ordered that she be remanded for the remainder of her sentence after he failed to receive appropriate documents from the sheriff detailing the nature of her medical condition.
Court spokesperson Allan Parachini denied suggestions that a power struggle over Hilton's fate was underway between Judge Sauer and the sheriff who released her.
On confirming Hilton's departure back to prison after the socialite 26-year-old attended a court hearing this morning, one journalist briefly delayed the press conference on the steps of the court with cries of "no, no, no, no".
After colleagues told him to "shut up" Mr Parachini explained the justification for Judge Sauer's decision.
"The judge said he advised the under-sheriff to file appropriate documents on a factual basis. He said that didn't happen. he'd seen no evidence, no contention to report that she had a medical condition," he said.
Media reports claim Hilton was seen to be crying as she was dispatched back to jail.
Mr Parachini declined to comment on the possibility that the sheriff's office may now belatedly submit documents outlining Hilton's claimed medical condition.
Observers say such an outcome could see her second stay behind bars come to another premature end.
