A high death toll is expected after a Pakistani security post in the northwestern district of Swat was hit by a suicide bomber.
A compound housing both military and paramilitary personnel was attacked by the blast on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera.
The explosion is thought to have occurred in the Tutano Bandai area of Tehsil Kabal, in a school building currently being used by the security forces.
"A vehicle laden with explosives was used by the bomber in a compound housing a large number of security forces," said the network's Islamabad correspondent Kamal Hyder.
"As soon as that happened, the building was rocketed and shot at by fighters surrounding the area. As a result, there is the suspicion of high casualties.
"The death toll is likely to be high given that these people were taken by surprise."
He added that an emergency has been declared in the region.
According to the AKI news agency, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The suicide bombing came as British prime minister Gordon Brown and newly-installed Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari pledged to combat the menace of terrorism in Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan.
