Pakistan has removed its national security adviser from office for apparently leaking details on the Mumbai terror attacks.

Mahmoud Ali Durrani was fired due to "irresponsible behaviour", a statement from the office of Pakistan's prime minister said on Wednesday.

It is thought his dismissal is linked to the admission that the lone surviving gunman from November's attacks was of Pakistani origin.

Reports suggest Mr Durrani leaked the news without government approval, with the released statement accusing him of "not taking [the] prime minister and other stakeholders into confidence, and lack of co-ordination on matters of national security".

Pakistan's Geo television station quoted Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Pakistani prime minister, as saying Mr Durrani's comments about gunman Mohammed Ajmal Kasab were unauthorised.

Almost 180 people were killed in the terror attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai last year. Since then New Delhi has continually pointed the finger at groups based or linked to Pakistan and asked Islamabad for cooperation in tracking down those responsible.

On Wednesday, Islamabad finally admitted that Ajmal Kasab was indeed of Pakistani origin.
