Barack Obama has secured a clear victory in the Democratic presidential primary in North Carolina, while Hillary Clinton has just won in the Indiana primary.

CNN reports that Mr Obama won 56 per cent of the vote in North Carolina while Ms Clinton picked up 51 per cent in Indiana.

While neither candidate scored the knockout blow needed to secure the nomination as the Democrat candidate to challenge Republican John McCain to become the next United States president, experts claim Senator Obama's lead is looking increasingly unassailable.

Ms Clinton's win in Indiana was essential for her campaign to stay on track and she told supporters in Indianapolis last night that it was "full speed on to the White House".

In North Carolina, Mr Obama told a crowd: "There are those who were saying that North Carolina would be a game changer in this election.

"But today North Carolina decided the only game that needs changing is the one in Washington DC."

There are six contests left in the Democrat race but neither of the pair can now win enough delegates to secure victory before voting ends on June 3rd.

The 800-odd super-delegates will therefore have the final word on which candidate will win the Democratic race.
