Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has outlined his "closing argument" to US voters.
Eight days before Americans go to the polls Mr Obama told supporters they were close to achieving his much publicised change.
"After decades of broken politics in Washington, eight years of failed policies from [President] George Bush, and 21 months of a campaign that has taken us from the rocky coast of Maine to the sunshine of California, we are one week away from change in America," he said.
He attacked his Republican rival John McCain over an apparent negative campaign and said that during the difficult economic times voters needed to choose "hope over fear".
"It's about a new politics - a politics that calls on our better angels instead of encouraging our worst instincts," the Illanois senator declared.
Mr Obama currently leads Mr McCain in all the main national polls with a new Washington Post survey stating that in the crucial state of Virginia he holds a 52 per cent to 44 per cent lead.
