Nato forces have disarmed a pirate ship of sticks of dynamite and heavy arms after receiving a distress call from a Norwegian oil tanker.
Sky News reports that a Nato warship, Portugal's Corte-Real, was alerted to the danger posed by the pirates by the MV Kition ship, which was 100 miles off the Somali coast at the time.
Speaking about the operation to the broadcaster, Lieutenant Commander Alexandre Santos Fernandes said the suspected pirates abandoned the ship and fled as Nato forces boarded their ship.
The crew were later intercepted but released as Portuguese forces could not arrest them if they committed no crime against the people or property of their country.
In comments cited by Sky News, he said: "Portuguese special forces performed the boarding with no exchange of fire."
On the ship, they found large sticks of dynamite, automatic rifles and rocket propelled grenades. The weapons have been seized.
