The leader of the main opposition party in Zimbabwe has been taken into police custody.

Morgan Tsvangirai was held en route to a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) rally.

Party spokesman Nelson Chamisa said Mr Tsvangirai was being illegally detained in a police station in western Zimbabwe.

"They are not saying why they are holding us up," he said.

"It's not an arrest but illegal detention. It appears they want to disrupt our campaign programme."

The party's vice president, national chairman and their bodyguards are also being held in Lupane, Mr Chamisa added.

Mr Tsvangirai claims he won the March 29th presidential elections outright to oust incumbent Robert Mugabe from power.

But the country's electoral commission ruled neither man gained a 50 per cent share of the vote, with a run-off due to be held on June 27th.
