The Ministry of Defence has released the name of the British soldier killed in southern Iraq yesterday.
Second Lieutenant Jonathan Carlos Bracho-Cooke of the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment died when an improvised explosive device hit his patrol in Iraq's second city, Basra, where the bulk of British forces in the country are stationed.
The 24-year-old, who was due to get married in August this year, was commanding the patrol of Warrior armoured fighting vehicles when the incident occurred.
"Jonathan Bracho-Cooke was a fine young platoon commander who had quickly established himself under very difficult conditions," Lieutenant Colonel Simon Hutchinson, the dead soldier's commanding officer, said.
"He really stood out as a bright, enthusiastic and charismatic officer. We are very proud that he chose to be one of us, and are desperately sad to have lost him."
Defence secretary Des Browne said that Second Lt Bracho-Cooke's death, the 131st British fatality since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, was "tragic news".
"My prayers are with his loved ones and comrades on this sad day, and all those serving in Iraq are in my thoughts," he said.
