Afghanistan's president Hamid Karzai will not attend the United Nations general assembly this week, reports suggest.
The al Jazeera news agency claims Mr Karzai has decided to skip the meeting to concentrate on the ongoing political crisis in the his country.
Afghanistan has been plunged further into chaos following the eagerly-awaited national elections last month with a result still to be declared.
Provisional results handed victory to the Mr Karzai but the announcement has been marred by accusations of vote-rigging.
Western powers had hoped the elections would prove stability was returning to Afghanistan, justifying the ongoing military campaign in the country.
With escalating death tolls and a seemingly chaotic election, public opinion, especially in the United Nations, is now turning against the war against the Taliban and further troop deployments however.
Talks at the UN are due to start today, with the ongoing situation in Afghanistan expected to be one of the main themes for discussion.
