US Republican presidential nominee John McCain has told supporters he can come back from behind in the polls to defeat Democrat Barack Obama in next month's election.
Speaking to supporters in Virginia and North Carolina on Monday, the 72 year-old said: "My friends, we've got them just where we want them."
Mr McCain is attempting to restart his presidential campaign after faltering over the financial crisis which saw him temporarily suspend his campaign to return to Washington to discuss the controversial bail-out package.
The Republican nominee tried to distance himself from president George Bush's economic policies, saying: "We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: waiting for our luck to change."
Mr McCain will face Mr Obama in the last of their televised debates tomorrow with polls showing the Democrat pulling away from his rival.
A new Washington Post/ABC News poll placed Mr Obama ten points ahead of Mr McCain.
The Democrat is also reported to be making considerable gains in the key states.
In Colorado a state won by the Republicans in the last three elections Mr Obama is said to hold a four point lead, while in Ohio he is also leading by three points.
