Kenya's president Mwai Kibaki has unveiled a new power-sharing cabinet after striking a deal with the main opposition party.

The move of reconciliation should bring an end to the political crisis that has gripped the country since December.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga was named as Kenya's new prime minister after the two men agreed a deal on Saturday.

Mr Kibaki, standing alongside Mr Odinga, said in a live televised speech today: "I am today announcing the cabinet of the grand coalition government."

Violence swept across Kenya after presidential elections in December, with 1,500 people being killed and 600,000 more being displaced.

The fighting started after Mr Kibaki announced that he had won the election and would retain power.

Mr Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party however alleged the election had been rigged and declared that in fact Mr Odinga had one the national vote.

Months of violence ensued before former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan brokered a power-sharing deal at the end of February.

Kenya's new cabinet will now work over the next year to produce a new constitution that will address the long-term internal struggles involving land, wealth and power.
