Kenya's new prime minister Ralia Odinga has been sworn in today.

Mr Odinga's appointment is part of a power-sharing deal in Kenya which has brought an end to months of violence following December's disputed presidential election.

Kenya's president Mwai Kibaki named Mr Odinga as the country's prime minister, a position specially created as part of the power-sharing deal, on Sunday.

The two former rivals agreed to form a coalition government in February after a series of negotiations brokered by former UN general-secretary Kofi Annan.

Widespread violence broke out across the country after the December presidential elections.

Shortly after the polls Mr Kibaki announced that he had won and would be retaining power in Kenya.

However, Mr Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party also claimed victory and alleged the elections had been rigged.

Over a thousand people were killed in the violence and 600,000 people were forced to flee their homes.
