Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has promised a "disproportionate" response to rocket attacks from Gaza.
Mr Olmert told his cabinet at a weekly meeting the country would not tolerate renewed rocket fire following two recent attacks on southern Israel.
"We've said that if there is rocket fire against the south of the country, there will be a disproportionate Israeli response to the fire on the citizens of Israel and its security forces," he said.
Israel and Hamas both declared truces two weeks ago, ending the three-week conflict.
However, there have been accusations from both sides of breaking the ceasefire.
Soon after Mr Olmert's comments, militants fired mortars at an Israeli village near the Gaza border, injuring two soldiers and a civilian.
Egypt has been brokering a peace between Israel and Hamas and there are fears the threats may disrupt the process.
Hamas is reportedly considering an Egyptian proposal for a year-long truce starting on Thursday.
An adviser to the Hamas government in Gaza told news agency AFP that things were moving "in a positive direction".
The recent 22-day war killed more than 1,330 Palestinians and 13 Israelis.
