Coalition forces have discovered a car bomb factory in western Iraq after help from local citizens, it has been confirmed.
Soldiers in the northern division of the multi-national force located a car bomb factory, terrorist command cell and a large cache in the western desert of Salah ad Din province last week, as manoeuvres during Operation Phantom Phoenix continued.
Local residents had alerted soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) to the discovery as they scoured the country for al-Qaida operations.
More than 1,000 pounds of homemade explosives were discovered as well as 30 pressure plate road bombs, multiple mortar rounds, video equipment, training equipment and four vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
"The soldiers of the 'No Slack' Battalion severely weakened the enemy operating in southern Salah ad Din province when, thanks to the help of an informant, they discovered and destroyed an enemy training camp and sizeable explosives cache," said Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Hauerwas, 1st Brigade Combat Team executive officer.
"The action degraded the enemies' ability to intimidate and terrorise the people of Iraq," he added.
