North Korea has warned the United States it will hit back if attacked and described itself as a "proud nuclear power".
In a commentary piece, the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper warned the US to "take a correct look at whom it is dealing with" and accused Washington of building up regional firepower.
"It would be a grave mistake for the US to think it can remain unhurt if it ignites the fuse of war on the Korean peninsula," the paper said.
The threat on Monday came as the US navy continues to track a North Korean cargo ship off the coast of China which US officials claim could be carrying missile parts.
The ship is believed to be on its way to Burma and has been tracked by US boats since last Wednesday.
Tensions between the west and Pyongyang have become increasingly strained since the north launched a series of missiles and carried out an underground nuclear test earlier in the year,
South Korea and the US believe another launch could be planned for July 4th, Independence Day, and could be fired in the direction of Hawaii.
In today's commentary piece, North Korea reiterated its vow not to surrender any nuclear weapons it may possess.
