An earthquake measuring 5.4 hit south-east Los Angeles last night.
There have been no reported casualties or significant damage, though a large number of buildings were evacuated.
Officials claim the quake's epicentre was 29 miles south-east of central Los Angeles, near Chino Hills in San Bernardino county.
The US Geological Survey reports strong shaking and minor damage felt from Arizona to Nevada.
Nearly 50 aftershocks have been recorded so far, most of which have been small.
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger claimed the earthquake acted as a reminder of the volatile geology on which the state stands.
"This reminds us once again that in California we have to be prepared for anything and everything," he said.
