Swapping the tux and martinis of James Bond for the camp delights of Mamma Mia was always going to be a big step and actor Pierce Brosnan has admitted the pressure did not escape him.

The former 007 is one of a number of A-listers starring in the film version of the hit stage musical.

Other actors include Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

"All of us put our neck out on the line for this," Brosnan told BBC Breakfast. "That was what was so much fun about it."

He added that the chance to star in the Abba musical was the "last thing" he expected to be offered.

"To see an ex-MI6 thespian singing and dancing in the world of Mamma Mia... people are going to howl," the 55-year-old said.

Mamma Mia sees 20-year-old Sophie invite three men to her wedding, one of whom she believes to be her father, on a small Greek island where she has been brought up.

Brosnan is set to attend the world premiere of the film in London's Leicester Square this evening.

Firth and Streep are also expected.
