The identity of the British soldier accidentally killed yesterday in southern Afghanistan has been revealed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Lance Corporal Shaun Tansey, a 26-year-old from Newcastle, was killed in the Northern Helmand province following an accident which the MoD said involved a military vehicle which was "undergoing routine maintenance".
His death represents the 12th among British soldiers in Afghanistan in the last two months, following on the back of a separate accidental death last week.
"LCpl Tansey was a bright and intelligent soldier, an extremely competent and utterly dependable operator," commented Lieutenant Colonel Edward Smyth-Osbourne, commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Regiment.
"With his death the Household Cavalry has suffered the loss of another exceptionally talented member of the Regiment. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," he added.
LCpl Tansey had served with the Life Guards in Iraq before moving to Afghanistan, where had had often served "in the thick of the action" according to the MoD.
