At least ten people have been killed in a car bomb attack at Blad Ruz market north-east of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

More than two dozen were also wounded in the blast at what is a predominantly Shi'ite Muslim region in the province of Diyala, which has been targeted by suspected Sunni Muslim insurgents in previous weeks.

The market was packed with shoppers at the time of the attack, police said. In the same province a further five people were killed when insurgents opened fire on a minibus.

Bald Ruz was attacked in March when a bomb in a cafe killed at least 26 people, a blast which was also blamed on Sunni insurgents with links to al-Qaeda.

US troops have been sent to the area to increase the coalition security presence as well as implementing a security crackdown in the capital.

Military officials said six US soldiers were killed in five separate attacks in Iraq yesterday. The troops died in attacks in Baghdad and both Diyala and Nineveh provinces.

May was the deadliest month for the US military in more than two years and the third-deadliest month for Americans in the four years of the Iraq war.

Ali Khudir al-Kind, a Sunni cleric, was killed in a drive-by shooting in west Baghdad while walking home.

According to the Associated Press news agency, at least 57 people were killed or found dead on Saturday. A number of bodies showed signs of torture and were found on the streets of the capital.
