Pakistan must hold elections as planned next month, British prime minister Gordon Brown has said today.
The assassination of two-time Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto yesterday has led to concerns the January 8th polls may not go ahead.
But in a phone call to Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf today, Mr Brown has expressed his view that sticking to the planned timescale is crucial.
He also passed on the condolences of the British people to all Pakistanis after the opposition leader's assassination in Rawalpindi yesterday afternoon during the call.
And Mr Brown pledged UK support to Pakistan in the fight against al-Qaida, which has today reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
