The Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's second wife is filing for divorce after 19 years of marriage.
Veronica Lario has confirmed reports in the Italian press that she had retained an attorney to begin the separation and told La Stampa after recently speaking up about his flirtations with other women.
"I was forced to take this step," the paper quoted Ms Lario as saying.
Last week, Ms Lario, a former stage actress, voiced her outrage over reports Mr Berlusconi was planning to put forward female TV stars as European Parliament candidates.
"The impudence and shamelessness of power offends the credibility of all (women), damages women in general and especially those who have always struggled to defend their rights," she said.
Ms Lario was also angry after her husband attended the birthday party of an 18-year-old in Naples but he "never came to the 18th of any of his children, even though he was invited".
Mr Berlusconi said in a statement: "It's a personal issue that pains me, that is in the private sphere, and which seems necessary not to speak about."
Ms Lario, 52, and Mr Berlusconi married in 1990 and have three children in their 20s.
