A man accused of decapitating a passenger on a Greyhound bus will not be deported back to China because he became a Canadian citizen two years ago, reports suggest.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, is accused of killing bus passenger Tim McLean, 22, in a seemingly motiveless attack during a bus journey between Edmonton and Winnipeg, Manitoba earlier this month.

The case has attracted global coverage and there have been demands for Mr Li to be sent back to China.

However, sources claim he officially became a Canadian citizen in November 2006 and will therefore remain in Canada.

Mr Li is accused of attacking Mr McLean with a large hunting knife, stabbing him 50 to 60 times before cutting off his head and showing it to other passengers.

Prosecutor Joyce Dalmyn has asked for a mental evaluation of Mr Li, who when asked by Judge Michel Chartier if he wanted legal representation during a preliminary hearing, simply replied: "Please kill me."

Mr Li is charged with second degree murder and has yet to enter a plea. He is due back in court in September 8th.
