Russian president Vladimir Putin has repeated a threat to target missiles at neighbouring states if they agree to host US defence systems.

Mr Putin claimed, at his annual news conference, that Russia would be forced to "aim missiles" at countries like the Czech Republic and Poland, who are planning on allowing the US to build weapon interceptors.

Earlier this week the Russian leader claimed Moscow might target Ukraine if it sited elements of such a system.

Mr Putin claimed: "We are warning people ahead of time: if you take this step, then we will make this step."

The Russian leader also confirmed his desire to wield significant power when he steps down as president to become prime minister next month.

Speaking just two weeks before the presidential elections on March 2nd, Mr Putin said he was "ready to work as prime minister".

The upcoming elections are likely to be won by Mr Putin's chosen successor Dmitry Medvedev.

Mr Putin said that he would be premier "as long as Mr Medvedev is president and if I see that I am meeting goals that I myself have fixed".End of story
