Anti-Syrian MP 'killed in Beirut bomb'

Wednesday, 19 Sep 2007 20:15
Anti-Syrian MP reportedly among six people killed in Beirut car bomb
An anti-Syrian MP is thought to be among up to six people killed in a car bomb in Beirut, Lebanon.

Officials have indicated that Maronite MP Antoine Ghanem and five others died in the blast in the largely Christian district of Sin el-Fil.

"The explosion took place in the Sin el-Fil area near the Metropolitan hotel," a security source told al-Jazeera.

Television pictures showed several burning cars and damaged buildings in the aftermath of the attack, which is the latest to target anti-Syrian politicians since former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri was assassinated three years ago.

Last November, Pierre Gemayel, the son of the leader of the Phalange party that Mr Ghanem belonged to, was killed in a similar attack in Sin el-Fil.

And earlier this year another anti-Damascus figure, MP Walid Eido, died along with nine others in a car bomb attack in Beirut.

Syria has denied any involvement in the death of any Lebanese politicians since Mr al-Hariri was killed.End of story
