French president Nicolas Sarkozy has urged Russia and the US to step back from their missile plans.

Russia and the US are locked in a dispute over American anti-missile sites in the Czech Republic and Poland.

President Dmitry Medvedev has condemned the program, which the US insists is to protect against a potential attack from Iran.

In response, Russia plans to site missiles in Kaliningrad, on the borders of the EU.

However, a temporary truce has been struck, Mr Sarkozy told reporters after a meeting with Mr Medvedev in Nice.

"I have suggested that in mid-2009 we could meet within a framework to lay the foundations of what could possibly be a future pan-European security system.

"This would bring together the Russians, the American and the Europeans.

"Between now and then, please, no more talk of missile deployment or anti-missile deployment," he added.

The summit between the current president of the EU, Mr Sarkozy, and Mr Medvedev came after the EU agreed to start talks with Russia again on broadening their partnership.

The trade talks have been frozen since the war in Georgia began last August.
