Russian scientists say the subterranean Lomonosov ridge extending into the resource-rich Arctic Ocean is an extension of Russia.
The announcement puts Moscow's claims to the vast natural resources lying under the Arctic Ocean on a scientific backing and will do little to dampen interest among competitors for the region's resources.
The tests mean Russia has exclusive rights to develop the ridge's natural resources in accordance with agreements previously established through the United Nations, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Anatoly Kolodkin, president of the International Maritime Law Association, as saying.
His judgment follows the announcement earlier today by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources that "Lomonosov Ridge and Mendeleyev Rise are an extension of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation".
The scientists who established Russia's claim used a submarine to plant the Russian flag on the seabed underneath the north pole last month.
Their claim ignited speculation among other states interested in utilising the Arctic region's natural resources, which will become easier to access as global warming melts the polar icecap.
The US, Canada, Denmark and Norway all have competing claims to the region which are yet to be fully verified by international law.
