At least two people have been killed after police fired live bullets into crowds of demonstrators in Kenya.

Eyewitnesses say a five-year-old boy is one of two people killed in the clashes between rioters and paramilitary police, which come on the second of three days of anti-government protests.

Yesterday up to four protestors died when police fired bullets into the air and deployed tear gas in the capital Nairobi and opposition strongholds of Kisumu and Eldoret in western Kenya.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) called on its supporters to take to the streets after a promise of a unity government failed to materialise from president Mwai Kibaki.

Mr Kibaki's disputed re-election last month has seen more than 600 people killed and a quarter of a million displaced across Kenya.

ODM leader Raila Odinga's supporters say he has illegally been denied the presidency.

The ODM has already scored its first victory over the government by using its status as the single-biggest parliamentary party to elect its first-choice speaker, Kenneth Marende.

Foreign donors have warned Kenya it will stop supplying aid if the political situation is not reconciled.

Negotiations between the government and opposition have been hindered by former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan delaying his arrival to Kenya because of illness.
