Representatives from the European Union and Japan will meet in Tokyo today to discuss global challenges including climate change.
The meeting will focus on how the EU and Japan can strengthen ties to address global warming.
European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, who will represent the EU in the meeting with Japanese prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, said it is vital climate change is addressed by industrialised nations.
"[Japan and the EU] have a shared responsibility to show leadership on key global challenges," said Mr Barroso.
"Climate change is perhaps the single most important of these and industrialised countries must lead by example."
Today's discussions come ahead of the G8 meeting in July, which Japan will host.
Mr Barroso said the G8 meeting will need to build common ground for a climate treaty to take place once the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.
The EU/Japan meeting will also discuss the Millennium Development Goals, global economic prospects and regional issues in east Asia, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Myanmar.
