Baghdad hit by twin bomb attack

Iraq In Focus

At least 32 people have been killed in a series of bomb attacks in Iraq, local officials claim.

Two bombings near the police academy in the capital of Baghdad on Monday killed 15 people, while at least 14 others were killed in a suicide car bombing in the northern city of Mosul.

Reports suggest a suicide bomber blew himself up near the entrance to the police academy in the centre of Baghdad this morning, shortly before a car nearby exploded.

A further 45 people were wounded in the attack and among the dead were academy students and civilians.

Earlier, a senior military officer was seriously injured in a roadside attack as he left his home.

The blast in the Sulaikh district of Baghdad killed Major General al-Mawla's driver and a number of civilians, reports claim.

The former officer in Saddam Hussein's army is now a high-ranking member of Iraq's national reconciliation committee.
