Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that the country has begun installing 6,000 new centrifuges at its uranium enrichment plant in Natanz.
Mr Ahmadinejad made the announcement on state television on Tuesday during a visit to mark Iran's national nuclear day.
Iran is believed to already have 3,000 centrifuges used to enrich uranium at the plant.
The US and a number of western nations have accused Iran of planning on wanting to enrich the uranium to build nuclear weapons, claims firmly denied Mr Ahmadinejad.
Instead Iran has claimed that the plans are for a civil nuclear energy programme and continues to defy demands made by the United Nations (UN) security council to stop the enrichment.
The UN as a result had passed three sets of sanction against Iran for its refusal to suspend nuclear activities.
Mr Ahmadinejad's trip today is scheduled to coincide with Iran's National Day of Nuclear Technology, marking the second anniversary of the first enriched uranium by the country on April 8th 2006.
