Palestinian militant and Israeli soldier killed in Gaza

Wednesday, 09 Apr 2008 14:32
Fresh violence has broken out in the Gaza Strip
A Palestinian militant and an Israeli soldier have been killed in a gunbattle in the Gaza Strip.

The firefight took place in the early hours of Wednesday near the border fence between Gaza and Israel in the southern area of the territory.

The Israeli army announced that Saif Bissan, 21, was killed during the fighting and two other soldiers had been wounded.

Hamas, the Islamist movement which controls Gaza, also claimed that one if its members Mohammed Shamiya, 21, had been killed in the battle.

Yesterday, an Israeli missile strike into Gaza killed another militant and troops claimed they discovered a 12ft deep shaft in a house 700 metres from the border fence.

A similar tunnel was used by militants to storm an Israeli border post and capture Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit in 2006.

The Israeli army announced today that it would continue "operating against terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip in order to prevent acts of terror against Israel".

Hamas threatened yesterday to storm Gaza's borders into Egypt, similar to action taken in January.

However, Egypt warned that it would "not take lightly the protection of its frontiers against any attempt to violate them, no matter who they are." End of story
