At least 55 people have been killed after an Egyptian bus crashed off the road into a canal south of Cairo, local officials claim.
The accident occurred on the stretch road between the city of Minya and Cairo on Sunday when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming truck.
Hospital officials claim that all those who died drowned before rescue teams could reach them. The accident is the worst in Egypt since 1987 when 63 passengers were killed.
One of the survivors who escaped through a window before the bus crashed into the canal, Nehad Ayad, told the AFP news agency: "I was riding in the bus and the next thing I heard was screaming and crying."
Reports suggest that the bus was meant to carry a maximum of 50 passengers but there were around 70 onboard at the time of the accident.
