US president Barack Obama has claimed North Korea poses a "grave threat" and called for stricter sanctions to be imposed on the communist state.
Mr Obama met with his South Korean counterpart in Washington on Tuesday during which the pair agreed the need to prevent the north from possessing nuclear weapons.
The US president backed further sanctions against the isolated state which recently carried out a nuclear test and a series of missile tests.
Speaking at a joint news conference yesterday with Lee Myung-bak, Mr Obama said: "We will pursue denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula vigorously.
"Given their past behaviour, given the belligerent manner in which they are constantly threatening their neighbours, I don't think there's any question that that would be a destabilising situation that would be a profound threat not only to US security but to world security."
The US president also said he wanted to end the pattern of North Korea causing a political storm and then being offered initiatives by international parties to back down.
