Debris discovered by search planes 400 miles off Brazil's coast belongs to the missing Air France jet which disappeared earlier this week, local officials have confirmed.
Brazil's defence minister Nelosn Jobim said the wreckage had been found along a three-mile strip and navy ship is due to arrive later in the area to begin recovering the debris.
Flight AF447 was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Pairs on Monday when it fell off radar screens.
Almost 230 people are believed to have been on board and a series of ceremonies remembering the missing are due to be held in France later, while Brazil has declared three days of mourning.
Speaking on Tuesday night, Mr Jobim told reporters the discovered debris contained some metallic and some non-metallic pieces and announced he had no doubt they belonged to the missing jet.
Although official confirmation has yet to be made, reports suggest an aeroplane seat and orange buoy were among the items spotted.
Experts have warned recovering parts of the wreckage, including the crucial black box recorders, could prove extremely difficult due to the depth of the Atlantic Ocean in that area.
