Iraqi officials have claimed three American tourists have been detained by Iran after they mistakenly strayed across the border between the two nations.

An investigation into the disappearance of the three people has been launched by the US, it has been confirmed.

A statement from the embassy in Baghdad said that "all available means" are being used to determine the current status.

Helicopters and land-based vehicles are thought to be searching the area, which falls in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region and features borders that are not well marked.

A report from the Reuters news agency claims the three went hiking near Halabja after they had been staying in the tourist resort of Ahmad Awa, around 100 miles from the eastern border.
