The father of Amanda Knox, currently on trial for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher, has admitted to severe difficulties in financing his daughter's defence.
Ms Knox is on trial on in Perugia alongside her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito accused of killing Ms Kercher after she refused to take part in a sex game at a flat the two women used to share.
The American student has been held in custody along with Mr Sollecito since the end of 2007 and her father Curt has told Italian TV that the family has spent more than £600,000 to help defend her.
Speaking to the talk show Matrix, he said: ''This is costing us a lot of money. We are approaching seven digits. We have mortgaged everything, our retirement has gone, everything has gone.
"We will do all that it takes to get Amanda freed and we will worry about the finances later."
Mr Knox said the cost was worth it though to help the 21-year-old prove her innocence and highlighted the fact she had decided to stay in Italy instead of returning back to the US.
''When this happened, we asked her if she wanted to come home but she said she wanted to stay and help the police catch the person responsible for this terrible crime," he continued.
''She only went to the police station that night to keep Raffaele company because she was scared to be on her own after what had happened.
"The next thing she knows is she is taken off to another room and interrogated.''
Ms Knox and Mr Sollecito have both denied murder.
