At least 12 people have been killed in a bomb blast in western Afghanistan, local authorities report.
The explosion occurred in the city of Herat on Monday and is believed to have targeted a police convoy.
Local reports suggest at least 20 other people were injured in the blast which officials claim was detonated remotely.
Police official Esmatullah Alizai reported the bomb had been left in a roadside bin and exploded as the convoy passed by.
Among the dead are believed to be police officials, plus civilians including a woman and a child.
Security forces are expecting insurgent attacks to escalate in the run-up to the presidential elections on August 20th.
US president Barack Obama has already sent thousands of extra troops to the country to help marshal the polls.
