An Afghan policeman has killed an American soldier after opening fire and throwing a grenade at a patrol, the US military has claimed.

The policeman allegedly attacked the US troops on patrol in Bermel district, in the Paktika province, from a tower.

The US military said that the troops returned fire, and the policeman was killed.

Last month, another Afghan policeman opened fire on US troops at a policeman in the Paktika province, killing an American soldier and wounding three others.

Elsewhere, a local police chief told the Associated Press news agency that an airstrike by foreign troops had killed several women and children in Helmand province.
