At least 23 people have died in heavy fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, as insurgents attacked Ethiopian and African Union troops.
Witnesses have told news agency AFP civilians were caught in the crossfire, as rebels attacked camps housing the troops in southern Mogadishu.
The troops were based at the strategic K-4 junction, which is between the airport and the presidential palace.
Somali Islamists have also threatened to attack Kenya if it goes ahead with its plan to train 10,000 government troops.
Kenya recently offered to train troops to help the Somali government in its battle to suppress the insurgents.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since President Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted in 1991 and the current incumbents only control parts of the war-torn country.
More than three million people need food aid in Somalia, according to the UN.
