A British soldier has been killed in Iraq, the 127th member of the UK armed forces to die in the country.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed this morning that the soldier, from 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, died when the vehicle he was travelling in was targetted by a roadside bomb in Basra in the south of the country.
"It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a UK serviceman was killed yesterday, Thursday December 28th 2006, in Basra, southern Iraq," a spokesperson said.
The incident happened during a "routine patrol" in Basra city, the spokesperson added, when the dead soldier was travelling in a Warrior armoured fighting vehicle.
He suffered severe injuries and later died at a field hospital at the Shaibah logistics base.
Next of kin are being informed but identification of the dead man is not expected for at least 24 hours.
The MoD says there were no other casualties from the blast.
Britain currently has 7,100 British troops serving in Iraq, primarily in the south of the country.
The 126th UK soldier to die in Iraq was Sergeant Jonathan Hollingsworth, from the Parachute Regiment
