All 27 member states have gone to the polls, with Britain sending 72 MEPs to the 736-member parliament in what is the largest trans-national election in history with an electorate of 500 million.

The UK mainland's 11 regions have announced their results, with Labour suffering a seven per cent drop in its overall vote and smaller parties such as Ukip and the BNP the main beneficiaries.
