A soldier reportedly committed suicide as Nicolas Sarkozy boarded a plane to leave Israel, sparking a massive security scare.
The French president and his wife Carla Bruni were rushed up their plane's stairs by security guards after the incident, which is still surrounded by confusion.
Reports on the ground claim a border soldier shot himself as Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and president Shimon Peres came to Ben-Gurion airport to see Mr Sarkozy and his wife leave Israeli after their three-day trip.
It was not immediately clear whether the soldier shot himself intentionally or had fainted, leading to his gun going off accidentally.
Mr Olmert and Mr Peres were initially hurried into armoured cars during the incident, but later returned to the plane to say goodbye to the French president and his wife.
